Although we celebrate the beginning of the New Year on January 1st, a New Year truly begins in nature and in Astrology at the time of the Vernal Equinox and the entry into Spring in the Northern latitudes.
If we were to take a look at Christian theology, we would see both the Winter Solstice and the Vernal Equinox to be the two most important times in the life of Jesus the Christ.
The Winter Solstice, that time of year in the northern latitudes when daylight is at its shortest, represents the birth of the light at the darkest point and celebrates the birth of Jesus in the stable of animal passions to become the Christ.
The Vernal Equinox ends the Winter and begins Spring with its rebirth, regeneration and renewal. This event occurs at the time of the passion of the Christ, the final drama with the crucifixion, resurrection and ascension of the Christed consciousness.
This sense of rebirth is seen throughout nature as we celebrate the Vernal Equinox and the entry into Spring. It is truly the beginning of a new year. Baby animals are born in the Spring. Flowers and trees that seemed to lie dormant during the Winter months come to life into blossom and leaf. Everything seems to get a burst of energy in the Spring, including ourselves.
In Astrology, the Vernal Equinox is seen as the beginning of the annual cycle, as the end of Winter finishes the Sun's transit of Pisces and the beginning of Spring initiates the new annular cycle with the Sun moving into Aries.
Aries is a Cardinal Fire Sign and speaks to the primal scream of self-assertion: "World, here I am."
Feeling energized, enthusiastic and focused primarily on new aspects of self-discovery, Spring is a great time for us to explore new interests, participate in new activities, to test the waters of things that have piqued our curiosity or that have grabbed our attention.
Many of us feel 'Spring fever' during this season, a desire to step away from our daily routines, consider our possibilities, and stop to smell the flowers. We have gone through our winter period, often a winter of discontent when we felt restricted, internalized and even may have fallen ill to colds and flu. We are ready to throw off the shackles that bind. Even if we don't have a direction or an itinerary, Spring prompts us to get out and try something out of our ordinary.
Walks in the park or along the seashore, hikes into the mountains or by a meandering stream provide the sanctuary of nature's cathedral where we have the opportunity of seeing and feeling the abundance and bounty of the earth plane. We feel ever so alive in Spring, as though we had been reborn, renewed, revitalized, the renaissance of our being.
I always suggest to clients that during the Spring they try at least something new --- whether that new is traveling to an unfamiliar locale, doing their daily routine even just a little bit differently, or trying a new food or some other new experience. I would suggest for each of us that we try something new as we come into this Spring.
Spring is a time of initiation, a time when we can break out of our old definitions and allow ourselves to regain the awe and wonder of childhood and just experience life without evaluating it, trying to figure it out or resolving to define it. Spring is a time when we can 'just be', be in the moment, in the Now. Some have called this state of being Samadhi, nirvana, paradise, heaven or enlightenment.
Happy Spring!
